My guess is that the tail is inspired by old runestones here in scandinavia, some of them that depicts dragons have a tail like that, almost looks like three tails.

i hate all pictures of this sort. it´s normal that dragons that dragons have got slaves... the human people are 6 billion and dragons are 0.003% of this... this picture shows how cruel and evil human people really are.
