Perhaps the real question is if wisdom really IS his dump stat. Perhaps he actually has a high wisdom score because he had the common sense to just poke his big, bulbous eye rather then find ways around his anti-magic. Of course, this is sort of a surface observation since the later work on beholders (names Lords of Madness, if I recall) said that their eyes were rock hard and very durable. But the law of comedy wins in my book. It's like dropping a rock on a dragon's tail.
